Cynthia and I recently became kayaks enthusiasts, and of course, we had to bring our canine companions along with us in this fun ride. Well, it depends on what you consider fun. The first time we took them with us, it was chaotic and crazy, but we managed to keep our sanity throughout this ordeal.
We learned very fast that in order to enjoy our outing, food was a must, so we made 4 sandwiches, one for each one of us, chips, and a lot of water, We inhaled it all on our first stop. To our surprise, Bella, although she is a pit mix, loved the water so much that there were times when we had to tell her to get on the kayak. She probably thinks she is a funny looking fish. Anyway, Alex, on the other hand, needed a bit of encouragement, but by the second time we went kayaking she was swimming without any encouragement at all.
By the way, in order to accommodate Alex and Bella in our kayaks, they weigh 50lbs each, we bought a Wilderness Pungo 120, along with flotation devices for all of us. Please, if you decide to take your dog kayaking, buy a flotation device for her.
This is right before we got to the water. They were both so excited that they started to whine in stereo, but once they were out of the car they were fine. We all had a great time, but our bodies were killing us since we had to paddle with a dog weighing 50lbs. Ouch! If you decide to embark in this odyssey, please go at it slowly and don’t scare your dog. The point is for them and you to have fun. Do you kayak with your dog?
No, we don’t kayak with pets. But LOVE those PFDs! Smart pups 🙂
Thanks.
This is an awesome post! It’s nice to know other people took their dogs kayaking too!
When my Bella and I went kayaking she was so relaxed on the kayak I was in shock. It was almost like she didn’t realize we were floating in the water. She just laid there or sat up, her energy was so calm and peaceful. When we decided to get out of the kayak and in the water she then became a little anxious and quickly tried to swim to shore. Overall she was too precious and good company to have on our adventure!
Maybe when she’s a little older she’ll follow in your Bella’s foot steps and search for fish. I would love to see her really love the water.
I agree with you if you take your dog kayaking a life jacket is a must, especially if you get knocked over by the bigger boats.
OH MY GOSHHHH was I sore after out kayaking (Bella is only 5.2 lbs) I worked out a group of muscles I didn’t even know existed.
i definitely wanna go kayaking again with Bella.

Lol. You got lucky. Your Bella only weighs 5.2lbs. My Bella, she was with Cynthia is 50 lbs., and Alex, our 12 year old pit mix, is also 50 lbs. In other words, each of us had a 50lb. dog with us. We were beyond tired, but we are going to continue taking them with us:-) They seem to enjoy the water a lot.
I beyond impressed with your strength an additional 50 lbs would’ve been rough!
I look forward to see more of your kayaking adventures.
Have a great weekend 🙂

Lol. That is the response I’ve got from other kayakers. Yes, I’ll post more pics in the future. The best to you and Bella:-)
We kayak a lot too 🙂 our current set up is a two person sit on fishing kayak, we can fit our two kilo dog on but our 50 kilo rottweiler makes it sink!
Lol. I am so glad you take your dogs with you. A rottie? Omg, you are the best pet parent ever. At the beginning I wanted a sit on kayak, but we’d like to kayak even when it gets cold, maybe until December, so we had to get a sit in kayak. No, we will not be taking them with us once the weather starts getting chilly. I am so glad to find out there are other pet parents kayaking with their furry kids:-)
Yep. We take them both out in a powered aluminum boat- so much more room, and link (rottie cross) balances the boat for us 😀
Wow! You are certainly smart and resourceful:-)
Marcelita, you look like a professional kayaker😉. I’m glad you guys had a good time:)
You are so sweet! Yes, we had a great time, but getting from the house to the water was truly an odyssey. But, the more we do it the better our “kids” get. Thanks:-)
That’s a serious workout! I’ve kayaked and canoed with Eko before and was feeling it for days after.
You are so right. This week we went with Alex and Bella first, then the crazy ones that we are, we went with a kayaking group we joined this week for an afternoon laid back paddle. To say that we were tired would be an understament, but it was so much fun that we will continue to do it again and again:-)
looks like great fun 🙂
It was. Thanks for stopping by:-)
