Why Senior Dogs Require Extra Care In Cold Weather

Those humid, hot days of summer are long gone here in Annapolis, MD and we are enjoying a beautiful fall season with our canine companions while being mindful that our senior dogs require extra care and attention during cold weather and these are the reasons why:

  • Older dogs get cold easier because they are unable to regulate their body temperature therefore use sweaters, jackets, and booties when outdoors. Some dogs need sweaters when indoors as well.
  • Limping, joint stiffness, licking joints, etc., are usually signs of arthritis which can worsen during cold weather.
  • When you see decreased mobility in your dog, do take him for a short walk, but do it during the warmest part of the day.

Abby is our senior dog and even though she needs to go potty more often than before, needs a sweater both indoor and outdoors, requires help getting in and out of the car, and so much more, to be honest, we wouldn’t trade our Abby for any other dog. If you have a senior dog, be patient and understand that just like us humans, they also age and need special care.

If you have a senior dog, what do you do to make him/her comfortable? Take care.

  1. Some years we don’t get any snow and some years we do. We are visiting Maryland soon, but not Annapolis (Baltimore). I am curious what the weather will be.

Same here. That’s great! There’s a lot to see in Baltimore and you could even go to DC if you have time.

      1. Thank you Marcela. We are visiting our first grandchild Jack so may not have time for DC but maybe another time.

  2. It is still warm here in Dallas, where we live, but sometimes it get cold in December and January. We had a pug and she eventually got old and easily cold. We bought her a dog coat. When she started having difficulties walking we took her for short walks, let her go to the bathroom, and then we let her sit in a pet stroller as we walked the full walk. Our other dog who was not old also wanted to sit in the stroller and sometimes we let him. That looked funny. Walking around the neighborhood with two dogs in a stroller.

Yes, for those of us that are pet parents, well, we find it adorable. So glad in Dallas it only gets cold December and January. Annapolis, MD gets pretty cold from November to February.
