The Advantages Of An Adult Dog

on

A blast from the past, from L to R, Dozer, Sarris, yours truly and my Alex.

As you can tell by the title of this post, I am biased, or maybe I should say, I prefer adult dogs, right?

If you are going to a shelter and you are not taking a look at the adult dogs they have for adoption , let me tell you that you might just be passing on an amazing dog, and this is why:

  • You will not be surprised by how big she’ll get.
  • Most, not all, adult dogs are housebroken and crate trained.
  • You will not have to deal with the puppy and adolescent stage. Yay!
  • Less feeding and outings. The outings are for relieving themselves
  • You can still teach an adult dog tricks, or go for some behavior and training
  • A lot of them have a calmer temperament than younger dogs
  • They require less physical and mental activity that could fit perfectly for a busy family

I’ve raised, if memory serves, 3 puppies, and although I’d never trade the time I spent with them, I would not want to do it again. Charlie, he turned 4 years old this year, was 2 years old when I got him. The funny thing about it was that I told myself that I wanted a dog 3 years or older, and then I come home with a 2 year old GSD mix. Go figure!

Whether you decide to adopt a mature dog or not, do some research, ask a lot of questions, and make sure that your energy is equal or greater than the dog you will be getting.

Enjoy the beginning of this week, and if you just adopted a dog, congratulations!

  1. At my age, adult dogs are the best for all parties concerned.

You will be surprised, I was, to find out that at any age pet parents prefer an adult dog. I had a pet parent that with the best of intentions added a puppy to his family, but had to return such puppy because he realized that he an adult dog would be a better fit for his family.

  2. I’m with you Marcela! Adult dogs rock!
